What are Torque Converters: High Stall is a Good Thing

When we talk about manual transmissions, we know that the engine is connected to it through a clutch. Without this connection, it may not be possible to bring the car to a complete stop. On the other hand, automatic transmission vehicles don't come with a clutch to detach the transmission from its engine; instead, a device known as a torque converter is used for this purpose.

Although the torque converter may not look like much, several exciting things are happening inside it. On the other hand, your engine can be revved up higher at the stop to launch at a higher rpm with a high stall torque converter.

What is a torque converter?

The torque converter is a unique engine component, and its inner parts never see the light of the day, and if they do, it is never easy to figure out these parts. When a torque converter is compared to any other inner parts of the automobile, it resembles quite a bit a spaceship.

This component is used daily if your car comes with automatic transmission. Its job is almost the same as the manual transmission car's clutch. However, it is worth mentioning that, unlike a manual transmission car, a fluid offers the transmission the required power. Therefore, the engine doesn't stall, whereas the transmission changes.

The function of a torque converter

It is not easy to understand how fluid can offer the power of moving something as big as a vehicle. The torque control is achieved through a pump through which the fluid is sent around the converter specified by the crankshaft spin.

There is also a turbine in the housing that rotates when the pump fluid contacts the turbine vanes. This way, the torque is gauged for reaching the transmission with the help of the input shafts. The torque converter casing can connect to the flywheels, and the rate of its spinning is equal to the crankshaft. When the crankshaft rotates faster, the flywheel is rotated by more throttle, while the fluid propels much quicker from the pump allowing more torque through the transmission.

The best way of checking the stall speed is to check the gear at a crawl before the throttle is nailed. It would help if you had high stall speeds when torque and horsepower start to happen at a high rpm range, and this is where you can use a high stall torque converter.

Final Verdict

It is essential to know that the way through which the torque converter works is still a mystery. Although one may understand the basic mechanics, the engineering and intricate calculations can be understood by someone who has full knowledge of fluid mechanics. Choosing the suitable torque converter for the vehicle is essential, as the high stall torque converter can make the car accelerate better because it will take off at rpm range.
